Egg in the hole – Egg in the basket. Which is it?

I have never met a recipe so easy to make.  One that makes you seem like a magician.  One where your child will deem you a super-parent of sorts.  One that you will not be able to resist.  One that is called by soooo many different names you might as well make up your own name for the dish and add it to the long list.  I am rather partial to “Moon Eggs” myself, but that’s because I enjoy all things from another planet ….  Now I’m getting off point.  Yes, this easy to do recipe will have you done with breakfast-making in 5 minutes flat, unless you decide to get fancy on us and cook up bacon or sausage…..  but who needs fancy when you got EGG IN THE HOLE?

Ingredients for egg in the hole:

a slice of sourdough bread

butter (room temperature)

an egg

Let’s start with our slice of bread.  Take a sharp knife and cut a circle in the middle.  Or if you have a circle cookie cutter that will work too.

Then take a dab of butter and spread on both sides of the bread.

In a frying pan over a medium flame allow pan to get hot.  Then place your bread in pan and add a dab of butter inside hole.  Allow to melt.

Now carefully crack your egg in the middle.  Like this.

Next let your egg cook on each side for 2 minutes or to your liking.  You can use cut out piece of egg as a little hat for your eggy.  Cute, right?

  1. I call it Egg in a Basket since the first place I had tried it was at Crackel Barrel. That’s what they call it. Either way, whatever you call it, I like it! I also butter both sides of the cut-out bread and fry it too, it’s one of my favorite parts!

You know what can add a bit more tongue dancing interest? Crumbled pre-cooked chorizo or longaniza just before the egg is put in its basket.
